Reading of Toussaint Louverture Play
Running time: 59:29
This reading of C.L.R. James’ play was performed at The Black Jacobins Revisited: Rewriting History Conference at the Blue Coat Liverpool. This reading provides fascinating insights on James’ thinking, as the play he wrote was a precursor to his seminal book The Black Jacobins. Little heard of or known about since it was performed in London in 1936 with Paul Robeson in the lead role, this play reading was filmed back in 2013 by volunteers attending the conference for WORLDwrite’s C.L.R. James film project. With special thanks to perfomers Tayo Aluko and friends and organiser Rachel Douglas, author of the forthcoming book The Making of The Black Jacobins: Pasts, Presents and Futures.
